Senior Tech Day at the Rogers Library

When:   Wednesday, May 7th

Time:    10:00 am – 12 noon

As part of May’s month long celebration for seniors, the Rogers Library will be hosting a Senior Tech Day on May 7th.  Best Buy in Rogers will be partnering with the Friends of the Rogers Library in a day of sharing and teaching technology to seniors. We will learn to use an MP3 Player and download a book onto it from the Hennepin County Library site. Also, how to use a digital camera, cell phones, and a reasonably priced laptop with features that will be easy for seniors to use. Watch upcoming newsletters for all the details of this exciting day. If you have an MP3 Player, a digital camera, or a cell phone – bring them along and learn more about their special features that you haven’t figured out. Also, learn to bowl on a Wii game. Come and explore!

The Senior Advisory Board met February 26th, March 11th  and March 25th , 2008. Next meetings will be held on April 8th and April 22nd (second and fourth Tuesdays)  at 3:30 pm at the Rogers-Hassan Friendship Center, 25000 Hassan Parkway, at the corner of Territorial Road and Hassan Parkway.

Goals:

  • Encourage all seniors to attend open Senior Advisory Board meetings and Council meetings.
  • Do a Survey to ascertain wants, needs and interests of seniors.
  • Provide programs for all interests so all seniors can feel included: Crafts, embroidery, woodcarving, cards, games, get-togethers, outings, book clubs, dance, etc., at least 1-2 times a week.
  • Make Rogers-Hassan Seniors more visible in the community.
  • Develop a Senior Volunteers of Rogers.
  • Develop a Rogers Registry (to be coordinated through City Emergency Services) for all seniors living independently. (Safety Net System.)
  • Provide a full time director of the Senior Center.

Among upcoming events is the Open House at our Senior Friendship Center (Hassan Town Hall) on April 23rd. A bus ride will be available if enough people call Judy at 763-428-7657 to schedule a ride. Please plan to come and see YOUR new Center. We are planning some Bingo events and we will have a booth at Rockin’ Rogers Days in June. The Rogers-Hassan Senior Friendship Group is being incorporated as a non-profit charitable fund-raising entity for the senior efforts in this area.

The bus runs every week on Thursday! The cost is $2.00 for a round trip (please have exact change). The Rogers Lions sponsors part of the cost of our trip. There is a volunteer on the bus to help you with groceries and bags. We will drop you off for shopping at Cub, Kohls and Target. If you want to get off someplace not listed, and it is on the route, just let the Volunteer Coordinator know when you get on the bus. You can get a haircut, stop at a drug store, visit Best Buy or Cabelas, too!

We have a NEW bus! Midwest Dial-A-Ride is the new vendor for Senior Transportation Services in the 6-City area, (Rogers, Osseo, Dayton, Champlin, Maple Grove, and Brooklyn Park. The Township of Hassan does not participate in this dial-a-ride program.) Our group bus is comfortable and handy for taking us shopping in Rogers. We have a GREAT time. Come and join us. Just be at one of the pick-up spots (Word of Peace parking lot, Sugar Maple Apartments, Autumn Trails, Pleasant Place and Heritage Place) and get on board.

The Midwest Dial-A-Ride program also picks up Seniors of any age (residents of the 6-cities only) on Monday – Friday, so call and make an appointment to be transported to and/or from a destination within the service area. You can call their dispatch service to schedule transportation for any of your needs (within the 6-city area). The cost for service is $4.00 each time you board, in other words $8 to get there and back. You may call to schedule transportation up to the day you need it, however it is always subject to availability so you should call just as soon as you are able. The dispatch office is open to make appointments Monday - Friday from 8am – 5 pm. Call 763-235-2200 to schedule a ride, or with questions. Stacy Doboszenski is the Assistant City Administrator/Clerk with the City of Rogers and is also our newly appointed representative on the 6-City Senior Transportation Board of Directors that governs this program.

Voter Pre-registration Project

It appears that November of 2008 will bring one of the heaviest voter turn-outs in recent history. One of our seniors, Ray Lemke, is working with the City of Rogers to develop a system whereby people can register in advance. This will help keep the voter lines moving much faster and better serve people who would otherwise be waiting. A series of voter registrations will be held at the Rogers Community Room on Memorial Drive, and will be manned by our seniors. Information will be printed in future senior newsletters and in the local papers regarding dates and times.
