Jordan New Life Church in Minneapolis

Our Missionaries in Japan

On August 18-19 of 2007, 17 inches of rain fell in Southeastern Minnesota, flooding the town of Rushford. Several other towns, like Stockton, Minnesota City and Elba, were also affected. In Rushford alone, 90% of the businesses were affected, 68% of the town’s 670 homes were damaged, 7 of those damaged had to be demolished and some 90+ families are still unable to live in their homes.

In anticipation of the weather warming up and an upswing in interest by homeowners to get work done; Word of Peace members have an opportunity to assist in the ongoing relief efforts in Rushford.

You can participate, along with volunteers from Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, as a part of their Rushford Relief Day, scheduled the third Saturday of each month. Leave Lord of Life at 6:00 AM and return late that night. Work on various projects being coordinated by the LSS/LDR Relief Coordinators. Skilled and unskilled volunteers are welcome.

For more information or to sign-up, please contact Pastor David at 763-420-5015 or davidl@lordoflife.org or register online . You may also contact Social Ministry team member Dave Metcalf at 612-250-9875 or dmet2000@comcast.net .

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity Mission
To eliminate poverty housing from the Twin Cities area and to make decent, affordable shelter for all people a matter of conscience.

Habitat for Humanity works through locally formed affiliates to eliminate poverty housing by building simple, decent, safe, affordable housing for families in need. These families contribute hundreds of hours of sweat equity in the construction of their homes. The homes are then purchased with no interest mortgages and all mortgage payments go back into the creation of more affordable housing.

For the 3rd year in a row, our congregation will be participating with other local congregations, as part of the Northwest Metro Habitat for Humanity Church Coalition, and will be helping to build an 8-unit townhouse in Ramsey. The new Twin Cities Habitat townhouse will be located in the Ramsey Town Center Gardens at 149th Ave NW and Olivine Street NW.

The 2008 dates that our coalition will be helping with the build are July 7 – August 1 (Monday through Friday). Our goal is to provide 15 workers per day. No construction experience is necessary.  The work day starts at 8:30 AM and ends by 4:30 PM. Lunch is provided and Habitat supplies the appropriate tools if you do not have any.

Volunteers are needed to be Site Hosts, Crew Leaders, and General Construction workers and to prepare and serve lunches. There are also opportunities to provide financial donations or In-Kind donations of tools, materials and skilled services such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC.

Please visit the Twin Cities Habitat website at www.tchabitat.org to learn more about this great organization.

Contact Dave Metcalf, at 612-250-9875 or DMet2000@comcast.net, if you are interested in joining this work force or making a donation. You can also sign-up on the display board in the Gathering Area.

Bread for the World will sponsor a Letter Writing Day on April 27, 2008. Word of Peace members can stop after church services to use a sample letter and write to their US legislators. The letters address the need for government policies that help hungry and poor people improve their lives. All are welcome to stop, write and be a part of changing the world.

Our congregation is in the beginning stages of developing a relationship with Jordan New Life, an ELCA congregation, which is located in North Minneapolis. Word of Peace will aid in strengthening their church ministries through this connection. We will be making new friends and sharing in the joys of each other's ministries. More information will be provided as the relationship develops.

If you are interested in helping to develop this relationship, please contact Floyd Broman at 763-494-3226. Please visit www.jordannewlife.org to learn more about their wonderful church and their outreach programs for the North Side Community.

Consider giving Heifer International "alternative gifts" all year long.  Occasions such as birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and memorials are excellent opportunities to share the Love of Christ with the poor of the world.  There are gift cards at the Social Ministry Kiosk that can be used to tell someone what you have done in honor of their special day.

For more information, check out Heifer International

If you would like to help support our missionaries in Japan, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board by the church office.  Please take a moment to read their letter and prayerfully consider giving to this worthy cause.

Support donations can now be paid online through the Word of Peace Online Giving program.
