Welcome From Pastor Ron

Dear friends,
T. S. Eliot said, “Doubt and uncertainty are merely a variety of belief.”
Questioning is a part of faith. It is something we all share. A classmate who is now a theological professor said once that when he had dinner with his family after a day of school, his dad would not ask, “What did you learn in school today?” Instead, his father would ask the children, “Did you ask any good questions in school today?”
At Word of Peace, we are people of faith in Christ who ask questions on our journey. We believe that it is in examining our faith that it grows stronger. Come join us so we can “ask good questions” and grow together.
In Christ,
Pastor Ron Prasek
Senior Pastor
Building Plans: When to Begin Phase 1
Word of Peace's current facility is used for ministry to both our congregation and the community. As a congregation, we have recognized that our ministry is hampered by lack of space—especially for ministry to children. The plans for phase 1 include the addition of six classrooms, a large meeting room and enlarging our youth and education offices.
In January, the congregation approved the first steps toward going forward to building phase 1. This included:
- Funding the preparation of plans for the education addition (Phase 1)
- Hiring a team to organize a pledge drive for:
- The new addition,
- Reducing our debts, and
- A missions outreach
Kairos and Associates was hired to help organize the Capital campaign and that work is underway. The plans for the new addition are ready. Our church council has set June 1st for a congregational meeting to vote on approval to go ahead with these plans for either the summer of 2008 or the summer of 2009.
Before this congregational meeting, the church council requests your input on the possible timing for construction. Should we begin construction this June or wait a year? Some reasons for each are outlined below:
| Reasons to wait until 2009 to begin construction |
Reasons to begin construction in June 2008 |
A fund drive in the fall 2008 will assure that the funds for this project are pledged before beginning construction.
Beginning construction in June would require us to borrow money and we would immediately begin to pay interest on those funds. (This would increase our monthly payment by approximately $1,500 per month.
Beginning this June would require some changes in education plans already made for Vacation Bible School and Church School.

A proposal has been presented to the Council beginning construction this summer that would reduce the overall cost of the project from $700,000 to $460,000. This could be made possible by:
- Donated materials, specifically carpet, light fixtures, ceiling tile, plumbing, and mechanical equipment
- Donated time, specifically for painting, removing siding, and general labor
- Building “green” by using the existing outer wall materials as the outer walls of the addition.
Because of the economy of inflation, basic building costs by next year are projected to increase by as much as $100,000.
The current slow housing economy now means more people are available to be hired or to contribute.
The construction schedule would plan for the least amount of disturbance to Vacation Bible School and Church School.

Our church council asks for your input. Please give them your thoughts on when you think the project should begin.
On Sunday, May 18th, a survey will be distributed that will provide you with a way to give your opinion on this matter. Fill out the survey and drop it off before May 22nd at the church office, or send your thoughts by e-mail to the church office at kroline@woplc.org.
The church council will hold a special meeting on May 22nd, where a decision will be voted on and a plan of action will be determined. They will then bring the plan for discussion and a decision to the June 1st congregational meeting.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the church office or any of the members of our church council. Thank you for your attention and input on this very important matter.
